Abrasive wheels are used with angle grinders, chop saws, cut-off saws, bench grinders, and table saws to modify and prepare surfaces. As they are used with machinery, they are considered to be a more aggressive and faster tool to use, although different grits are available to suit your needs.
One of the advantages of using abrasive wheels and circular abrasives is that you can achieve more in a shorter amount of time. They improve productivity and are designed to be extremely durable, ensuring that you can get the finished result you are looking for with less effort. They are ideal for harsh conditions and can handle heavy industrial applications easily. Unsure which you need? Shop the range and find out more below.
Grinding wheels
One of the most common types of circular abrasives is grinding wheels. These wheels can cut and grind down various materials, including metal, plastic, wood and more. They can be used to create complex shapes or to smooth uneven and curved surfaces ready for finishing or painting. Our general and precision grinding wheels fit numerous machines including Norton, 3M, and SIA.
Flap wheels
For metal polishing, plating and restoration, you’ll want flap wheels. Made up of folded abrasive ribbons, also known as flaps, these can easily conform to different shapes and contours, making them ideal for use on a variety of surfaces. They are especially common for use within tubes and pipes as they can smooth the surfaces without compromising the create shape.
Deburring and finishing wheels
Any project requires a clean and smoothed surface, free from abrasives and materials, to ensure the perfect finish. Deburring wheels can achieve this. Offering medium-to-fine grades, they can be used on carbon steel, stainless steel, and numerous other surfaces. They are sometimes referred to as finishing wheels and come in different sizes to suit your needs. We stock convolute and unitised deburring wheels to suit your needs.
Cutting off wheels
As the name suggests, cutting-off wheels, or cutting wheels, are used to create narrow and precise cuts at 90° angles in a surface. The precision cutting action makes them best for using with large sheets of metal, with grinding wheels saved for smoothing the surface afterwards. They may be called slitting wheels and often come in packs to ensure you can easily switch out the wheel when it wears down.

FAQs
What can deburring wheels be used for?
One of the reasons that deburring wheels are so popular is that they can be used for different purposes. More often than not, they will be used to clean, blend, finish and polish materials including composites, plastics, and glass.
What’s the difference between convolute and unitised deburring wheels?
Convolute deburring wheels are wrapped around a standardised core, with the wheels designed to move in one direction. The direction of travel is often indicated by an arrow printed on the side of the wheel. Unitised are layed without a core and can move in both directions, making them perfect for smaller hand tools.
What causes a cut-off wheel to break?
Cut-off wheels can break if the life of the wheel has come to an end. However, more often than not, you’ll find that cutting wheels break because of a poorly clamped workpiece or over speeding the wheel. Before you use a cut-off wheel, check that everything is set up securely to prevent breakage and potential injuries.
