What is a sanding belt?

Sanding belts, also known as abrasive belts, are made up of abrasive grains applied to a backing material. Designed to be mounted onto belt sanders, they are used to sand, grind, and surface finish a broad spectrum of materials. What kind of belt should you use to sand metal?

When sanding metal, you need to ensure that the abrasive belt used is designed for the material. Many opt for zirconia or ceramic sanding belts, as they can remove metal faster and last longer than other materials.

Which material is best for sanding belts?

The best material for sanding belts will depend on the purpose. As a General rule of thumb, Aluminium Oxide will be fine for mild & low alloy steels & woodworking, Stainless requires the self sharpening properties of a Zirconia Grain & anything hardened or exotic would be best suited to a Ceramic type Grain. Silicon Carbide would be best for Glass, stoneware, plastics and soft materials like rubber and leather, as well as fine woodworking. How do I choose a sanding belt?

First, consider the requirements of the job. A heavier stock removal job will require a coarser sanding belt. 36 to 60 grit is ideal for a lot of the heavier work, while 80 to 120 grit sandpaper is perfect for smoothing surfaces. Also take into account the substrate you are grinding to get the best mineral and grit combination for your application. What size sanding belt do I need?

In order to measure the size of sanding belt you need, you need the circumference of the overall belt and the width. Ideally measure a old belt or if broken, unfold and measure the length. If you have a new machine you may have a machine name plate with model number, this may show your belt size also if un-customised . If in any doubt please contact us to identify.
